Are you able to look at yourself in the mirror without hating what you see? I think that it would be fair to say that a large percentage of us are not happy with what we see in the mirror. This is of course unfortunate because the way we feel about ourselves can have a very large impact on how we look.
You don’t have to take that last statement on a purely metaphysical bend. When we feel bad about how we look, we tend to give up and stop making any effort at all. It’s sort of like the athlete that is giving his/her all to finish the race; if you can’t stay focused on a positive outcome , which means that you are confident about yourself, then you won’t give very much at all.
Finishing the race means that you know that you can finish and then giving everything that you have to accomplish this goal. Looking good means that you know that you can look good and then doing everything that you can to look good. Look good for you, not to impress others. Look good because to look good means that you love yourself. Love yourself and don’t be ashamed.
Feeling good about how you look means being honest about how you look, and if you can’t stand the sight of yourself then there will never be improvement. You must begin by liking yourself, this way you can start to take stock of who and what you are. Be kind to yourself and try and help that person in the mirror.
Sure we all have bad hair days and we all have features that we do not find very attractive so give that person looking back at you a break and learn to look past the imperfections. Detach yourself from yourself and take stock of the image that you see before you. This means that you will have to look at yourself a lot. But don’t hate yourself for doing this and don’t let those stupid ideals about vanity stop you.
Think of your image as the outer part of you that expresses itself to the world. To convey beauty, feel beautiful inside (this applies to men as well by the way!). It’s not vain to want to look good; it’s just a natural desire to want to express the totality of your being.
Once you can like yourself enough to want to help yourself, look at the image of yourself without bias. Let your inner artist come out and begin to work on the image that you see before you. This is you, and how you are seen by others is directly related to what you want to tell the world about who you are. Whether you like it or not, whether you have been consciously doing it or not; what you look like outside is what you look like inside. Perhaps you are born with a disfigurement or perhaps you were in some kind of accident. Realize that this is not your fault, it just make your canvas unique, special, and perhaps more challenging but it cannot stop you from expressing your inner you.
Fix those things that you can, and learn to overcome those things that you can’t change. Explore your inner self and when you find the beauty, strength, and sexual appeal inside; strive with all your might to bring it out and express it outside.
Study fashion, skin care, physical fitness, nutrition, and use what you have learnt to make yourself look and feel good. Feel good because you are consciously expressing what you are inside and you are doing it for yourself. Don’t listen to anyone that would hinder you from expressing yourself. Be fair to others and don’t hurt others but aside from that, express yourself in whatever way you see fit. Make your own fashion or be a fashion guru. Wear purple hair or a crew cut, do what you feel and want.
Make your look an expression of your inner you and strive in everything to bring that inner you out.
